MATERIALS RESEARCH SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CENTER
Dear MRSEC Investigators,
Guidelines for Primary support: As per NSF, primary support refers to work performed that was based on having an intellectual home in the MRSEC as well as supporting the work financially through salary support of personnel or other direct costs. This will be a judgement call on your part, but !IMPORTANT! NSF will regard the MRSEC as the primary source of support ONLY if the MRSEC award is acknowledged FIRST in the acknowledgement. This is a new NSF MRSEC policy. Please remember that you are permitted to acknowledge the NSF MRSEC as primary even if a graduate student or postdoc working on the project is funded by another non-sponsored source, such as a MacCracken fellowship, startup, external fellowship, etc. If support is shared with another federal agency, then use your best judgement. If you are unsure, feel free to contact us.
As a MRSEC supported faculty, postdoc or graduate/undergraduate student we ask that you use the following acknowledgments for your publications -- presentations -- posters:
(A) If Primary support please use:
"This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC Program of the National Science Foundation under Award Number DMR-1420073."
(B) If partially supported please use:
"This work was supported partially by the MRSEC Program of the National Science Foundation under Award Number DMR-1420073."
Guidelines for Shared Facilities: Several instruments have been purchased with MRSEC funds, or have been augmented with MRSEC funds. These include the X-ray diffractometers, the SEM, confocal microscopes in physics and chemistry, the ellipsometer, and some more specialized smaller instruments. The use of these instruments should be acknowledged, even for projects not supported by MRSEC. There are reminders on the instruments and on the shared instrumentation facility for the major instruments.
(C) If Shared Facilities please use -- Acknowledgement language (sample, usually at the end of an acknowledgment): "The authors are grateful for shared facilities provided through the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) program of the National Science Foundation under Award Number DMR-1420073."
Please use (A), (B) or (C) when acknowledging NYU-MRSEC
